Tasmania: wild places

Tasmania

Tasmania is a treasure trove of wild nature, offering lush mountains, dramatic sea cliffs, enchanting rainforests, thundering waterfalls and awe-inspiring cave systems—all packed into an island just 1.5 times the size of the Netherlands. With only 500,000 inhabitants and over 50% of the island protected as national parks and reserves, Tasmania is a place where nature truly reigns supreme.

I’m inviting a small group of adventurous souls to join me in exploring the wilderness and wildlife of Tassie. Since 2023 iI’ve been lucky to call this my new home and I’d love to share my secrets!

You’ll get up and close with some of the world’s most iconic animals. You’ll even be feeding them by hand (in Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary)! We’ll go big tree hunting, with Tasmania being home to some of the biggest trees on earth (100m+). You’ll breath in the cleanest air on this planet and explore some incredibly beautiful and wild places – I’m thinking Walls of Jerusalem National Park, Mount field National Park, Gordon river Dam, Three Capes, Freycinet etc.. Depending on groupwishes we could chase platypus by kayak on the mighty Derwent River, or explore Maria Island by bike (full of wombats and Forester Kangaroos). We could go look for penguins, go whalespotting, taste some Tasmanian wines and whiskeys, oysters, scallops and/or dive into Tassie’s fascinating convict history. We will eat local foods, I’ll bake some bread, and you’ll get to taste my homebrews, including beer, cider, kombucha and elderflowerchampagne. We might even have orphaned wildlife in care at our little house in the bush, perhaps you can help us bottlefeed?

Tasmania’s weather can be unpredictable, so our schedule will remain flexible—but be ready to embrace adventure! Bring your backpack and sleeping bag (I may be able to provide tents), but more importantly: bring your love of the wild as we explore rugged mountain landscapes, dramatic coastal cliffs, and the authentic Tassie lifestyle.

We’ll be doing several long hikes and sleep in tents most of the trip.

Requirements: We’ll be doing lots of hiking on uneven, steep and treachorous terrain so a good fitness level is required, but there is no need to carry heavy backpacks. It is possible to limit our hikes to dayhikes only, unless you prefer to go all in and join me on some spectacular multidayhikes?

Price includes everything from the moment you arrive: car rental, pick-up and drop off from/to airport, petrol, National Parks passes, camping permits, bikehire, good food etc.

Price excludes: flight to and from Hobart
