🌳ANCIENT FORESTS ECOLOGY EXPEDITION

An immersive ecology expedition led by an internationally recognised forest scientist and a seasoned wilderness guide. This journey blends scientific discovery with deep wilderness exploration in one of the most extraordinary forest regions on Earth.

Did you know that Tasmania is home to trees that are among the oldest and largest living organisms on Earth?

Alongside towering giant eucalypt forests, you’ll find trees that are over a thousand years old—already ancient when Europeans first arrived in Australia. These living giants are reminders of the Jurassic-era forests of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, offering a rare glimpse into Earth’s deep evolutionary past.

Now, we have come together to create something deeper, richer, and more meaningful than either of us could have built alone: a first-of-its-kind multi-day specialist expedition for visitors to observe, explore, and study Tasmania’s unique forests in detail.

We will be walking, camping, and documenting forests in the field, moving through remote terrain and engaging directly with the ecosystems as they reveal themselves.

Participants will actively help document observations and collect ecological data, contributing to ongoing research in these rarely studied environments.

This means you will not only experience one of the most remote and pristine landscapes in Tasmania, but also contribute meaningfully to scientific understanding that can inform the protection of old-growth forests worldwide. Guided by two local experts, you will gain a deep, practical understanding of flora, fauna, geology, and landscape history, while being equipped with the tools to read and interpret wild mountain environments.

For me, this is what meaningful adventure looks like: deep immersion in place, paired with real contribution to the landscapes we move through.

To participate in this project, you must be fit and in good health. From a remote basecamp set within the forest, we will set out on a series of day trips into surrounding wilderness areas, moving through diverse terrain to explore, observe, and study these extraordinary ecosystems in depth.

Trip price includes:

• Transport from Launceston and back
• All  fees, permits and required National Parks passes
• All food, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and hot drinks
• Cooking equipment
• Emergency communications & group first aid kit 🧭
• Waterproof biodiversity field guides and references
• Observational science equipment and training
• A pre-trip briefing where we will study maps, discuss our goals and make detailed plans

✅ Things to consider

• You will receive a detailed packlist upon booking. If you don’t already own required gear (including a tent, backpack, sleeping bag, inflatable mattress, head torch and rainwear) we can assist you in arranging rental of this gear (total approx. €200).
• Launceston is a short airplane ride from the international airport in Melbourne. We recommend arriving a few days early to recover from jetlag and explore Tasmania’s other highlights.
• If you would like to extend your time in Tasmania or even the mainland of Australia after our trek, we are happy to help you explore options.
